What was the Realism Movement in art?
Realism in the arts is what is said to be "drawing what the eyes see". During this time period artists were not drawing feelings and emotions but they had begun to draw landscapes, portraits of ordinary people, paintings of ordinary life and surroundings, anything the human eye saw.
When did it begin?
Realism began in the mid-19th century, early 1850's in France and was inspired by the Romanticism and Historical art era.
How was the paint applied to the canvas?
Shadows were not black but were many different colors and there had to be an accurate perspective of the subject. It was eyesight realism and what the eye saw exactly. Most of the paintings were oil paintings and canvas art.
What role did science and photography have on this movement?
Many pantings before realism had to do with religion and emotions. During the Realism Movement artists were being more scientific using their senses especially their eyes. Realism mimicked photography but instead of more shades of black the shades were different colors.
