Why did impressionism develop?
Leroy, an art critic invented the term impressionism in 1874. He was inspired by Manet's painting called Impressionism, Sunrise, it was a way to describe their "unfinished style".
Eduardo Manet was the only artist whose work was accepted at the Salon de Paris. In the Salon de Paris (Paris Salon) there would be a daily art exhibition for spectators to go to. The juries were conservative of the traditional ways and didn't approve of impressionist painters, the juries didn't want to shift away from traditional painting styles.
Napoleon created the Salon de Refuses that exhibited all of the rejected impressionist artwork from the Salon de Paris in order to prove that salons were democratic.
Impressionism was also developed from realism but it was more focused on light and fleeting image.
