The picture above painted by Claud Monet is of Monet's wife in a kimono. He is also one of the well known impressionist artists to imitate this art.
Japonism
From the 1860's Japanese wood block prints became a source of inspiration for many European impressionist artists in France. Artists were especially interested in the lack of perspective and shadow, the flat areas that had strong colors and the composition of the subject that was usually low diagonal axis to the background. Works by Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters such as Edgar Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and Gustave de Jonghe show Japanese influence. A painting from this period that lacks shadow and perspective, is imitating popular Japanese works.
